Back in February, I shared with you that one of our goals for 2022 is to encourage our team to change the stigma in our office about the value of mental health.
With October being Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought it would be a good time to assess how we’re doing. I’m happy to say we’ve made headway and as we round the turn to head toward year’s end, I’m feeling confident about the mental state of our team.
This time of year can be stressful on any given year… we’re finalizing budgets for 2023, we’re headed into the holidays, the weather is getting cold which could mean last-minute calls from our customers. So knowing we’ve had a focus on making sure our team is in the right frame of mind before we get to this point of the year is important.
Here are some things we’ve done internally that might benefit your team if you’re starting to feel that end-of-year stress around the office:
- Our team meetings allow time for people to share what’s happening in their personal life (if they choose to do so);
- This time during the meetings can also serve as an educational piece of what’s going on in our industry around the world and how it’s being dealt with (this has been especially true with supply chain challenges we’ve faced);
- We’ve allowed for hybrid work in positions where applicable;
- We’ve encouraged team members to continue learning new skills so they can support other teams in a pinch;
- We’ve brought in a speaker to be an objective person to talk to us about the value of mental health on all of us.
As I said earlier this year, our team is mostly male and we, as a gender, are not usually apt to talk about our feelings. But creating a time and space in our meetings for this purpose has normalized the importance of mental health, and allows our team members to know we’re all in this together.
How are you focusing on the mental health of your team as we head into the holiday season and finish the year?
